Limits

PubPhys limits how much one account can do, so that one account cannot flood the screening, the review or the mail. A refused action says which limit it reached and when to try again; nothing is lost. A UTC day starts at 00:00 UTC.

The admin can change the limits read from the site's settings (revisions, topics, drafts and seals); this page always shows the current values.

Email digests and paused mail

WhatLimit
Email digests sent, for the whole site, oldest period first; the rest wait for the next day60 per UTC day
Digests stop for the day, or the month, when all mail PubPhys sent reaches this, and always before the part kept for security notices and password resets 70 per UTC day, 2400 per UTC month
Mail to an address that bounced for good or reported spam: none, not even a password reset until one confirmation link to it (good for 24 hours) is opened, or the admin lifts the pause

A digest goes at most once per period (daily or weekly) to one account, and only when something is unread (Notifications).

Registration

At most 5 registration requests per UTC day from one network address: each request sent at the email form that passes its checks while registration is open counts, even one that never ends in an account (a link not opened, an address already in use), and so does each account made by signing in with ORCID. For the whole site, at most 50 registrations per UTC day, counting accounts made and email registrations waiting for their link. Past either limit, registration pauses until the next UTC day. Invitations never count (Accounts).

Per connection

Forms are also limited per connection: signing in (10 tries in 3 minutes), signing in with ORCID (10 a minute), the registration form (5 an hour), and every other form that writes, from 5 an hour to 60 a minute depending on the form. Past the limit you are asked to try again later.

Each form that asks for your current password (changing an address, changing the password, deleting the account, and linking an ORCID iD with the password) allows 30 tries an hour from one connection, so the account's own pause after 10 wrong passwords comes first (wrong passwords).

The contact form takes at most 5 messages per UTC day from one connection (and 5 sends an hour), and 5 per UTC day from one account. For the whole site, at most 50 messages per UTC day from people not signed in and from accounts without an ORCID iD; accounts with an ORCID iD are outside this cap, so that a flood of messages cannot keep researchers out. Past a limit, the form says so and keeps what you wrote.
