Universality classes of dissipative phase transitions in atomic gases
In plain words
Driven atoms that also lose energy can switch abruptly between collective states. Whether these switches follow the same laws as ordinary phase transitions is unknown.
Precise statement
Continuous transitions in Markovian driven-dissipative atomic systems (driven Rydberg gases, pumped condensates) in $d = 2\ \text{or}\ 3$. Determine critical exponents and whether they coincide with equilibrium classes at an effective temperature or form new classes, such as the independent coherence exponent predicted by Sieberer et al., PRL 2013. Answer: measured exponents and class.
What would settle it
Measured critical exponents near a continuous dissipative transition, including a dynamical exponent absent in equilibrium.
