Collective effects of intense muon bunches in cooling absorbers
In plain words
Collider muon bunches carry trillions of particles, and their own fields and the charged gas they create inside absorbers may disturb cooling. How large these effects are is uncertain.
Precise statement
For bunches of $N \sim 4e12$ muons passing low-$Z$ absorbers (LiH, liquid H2, H2 gas) in a 6D cooling lattice, quantify emittance growth from space charge, wakefields and the ionization plasma created in the absorber, and determine whether they limit cooling at the design intensity.
What would settle it
Self-consistent beam-plasma simulations of the full cooling lattice at design intensity, benchmarked with an intense-beam absorber experiment.
