Achievable dose reduction at fixed diagnostic performance

In plain words

Counting photons individually should allow the same image quality at a lower dose, but how much lower is debated.

Precise statement

Quantify the dose reduction factor achievable with photon-counting relative to energy-integrating detection at matched task-based detectability, separately for high-contrast spatial resolution tasks, low-contrast detection tasks and material quantification tasks, for patient thicknesses of 20 to 45 cm. An answer is a factor with uncertainty per task class.

What would settle it

Matched-phantom and reader studies on paired systems with observer-model detectability analysis.

Status in the literature

Reported reductions of roughly 20 to 45 percent are task and system specific.
