Core-collapse supernova explosion mechanism
When the iron core of a massive star collapses into a neutron star, the rest of the star is blown off in a supernova. Computer models say neutrinos from the hot core reheat the stalled shock wave, but whether this works with the right energy for every star is unsettled.
Why it matters
Supernovae make neutron stars and black holes and much of the oxygen to iron in the universe.
