Galaxy quenching and black hole feedback
Many massive galaxies stopped forming stars billions of years ago even though gas is still around them. Something, probably energy from the central black hole or the heating of gas falling into the galaxy, keeps that gas from cooling into new stars.
Why it matters
Quenching sets the split between blue star-forming and red inactive galaxies and the upper limit on galaxy masses.
