Origin of hot Jupiters
Hot Jupiters are gas giants that orbit their stars in a few days, far inside the region where giant planets are thought to form. Whether they moved inward through the gas disk, were thrown inward onto stretched orbits that tides then made circular, or formed in place is still argued.
Why it matters
They were the first planets found around Sun-like stars and test theories of planet migration and tides.
