Pulsar radio emission and magnetar origin
Pulsars are spinning neutron stars that sweep radio beams across Earth like a lighthouse, and magnetars are neutron stars with fields a hundred to a thousand times stronger still. How the radio beam is made, and how magnetars get their fields, are both open.
Why it matters
Pulsars are precise clocks used to detect gravitational waves, and their emission tests plasma physics in fields of $1e12\,\mathrm{G}$ and above.
