Many-body quantum chaos and operator growth
In a chaotic quantum system a small local disturbance spreads until it involves the whole system, scrambling information. This spreading is measured by out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs), and a conjectured universal limit bounds how fast it can grow.
Why it matters
Scrambling connects black holes, transport in metals and the difficulty of simulating quantum systems.
