Contact electrification of insulators
Rubbing or touching two insulators, like a balloon and hair, leaves them oppositely charged, a fact known since antiquity. Which charged particles move, and why one material ends up positive and the other negative, is still not understood.
Why it matters
Static charging causes dust explosions and industrial hazards, powers triboelectric generators, and may contribute to lightning and planet formation.
