Deconfined quantum criticality
Normally a material can switch between two unrelated ordered patterns only through a sudden jump or an intermediate phase. Deconfined criticality predicts a smooth switch between magnetic order and a pattern of paired spins, driven by fractional particles that exist only at the transition.
Why it matters
It would be a phase transition outside the Landau symmetry-breaking framework, described by emergent gauge fields and fractional particles.
