Dynamical quantum phase transitions
After a sudden change of a parameter, the probability that a quantum system is found back in its starting state can show sharp kinks at specific times, by analogy with phase transitions at specific temperatures. How these kinks relate to ordinary order and whether they have universal features is unsettled.
Why it matters
They are a candidate framework for classifying far-from-equilibrium quantum dynamics as phase transitions classify equilibrium.
