Driven-dissipative quantum matter
Some quantum systems are continuously pumped with energy while losing particles or energy to their surroundings, like lasers or light-matter condensates. They settle into steady states that are not in thermal equilibrium and can have their own kinds of phase transitions.
Why it matters
Most quantum devices and simulators are open systems, and their steady states can host order and critical behaviour impossible in equilibrium.
