Superfluid helium-3 and quantum solids
Below about 0.0025 K, helium-3 atoms pair up and form superfluids with several distinct phases, some of which are topological. Solid helium is so quantum that its atoms and crystal defects can move in ways no ordinary solid allows.
Why it matters
Helium-3 is the cleanest known unconventional superfluid and a test system for topological matter, phase transitions and quantum defects.
