Quantum oscillations in insulators
In a metal, resistance and magnetization oscillate as a magnetic field is raised because mobile electrons move on closed orbits; an insulator has no mobile electrons, so this should not happen. Yet the Kondo insulators SmB6 and YbB12 and the two-dimensional insulator monolayer WTe2 show such oscillations.
Why it matters
If intrinsic, the oscillations imply a Fermi surface of charge-neutral particles or a breakdown of the standard link between quantum oscillations and metals.
