Many-body localization in large systems
Disorder can stop waves from spreading, and many-body localization (MBL) is the claim that this survives when particles interact, so the system never thermalizes. Whether it survives in truly large systems, and in two dimensions, is disputed.
Why it matters
If MBL exists it is a phase of matter that keeps local memory of its initial state forever, the only known generic exception to thermalization.
