Wigner crystals of two-dimensional electrons
When electrons in a flat sheet are spread thin enough, their mutual repulsion beats their kinetic energy and they freeze into a regular lattice called a Wigner crystal. How this crystal melts into a liquid as density rises, and what lies between the two, is not known.
Why it matters
It is the simplest strongly interacting electron problem and is now realized and imaged in semiconductors, transition-metal dichalcogenides and graphene.
