Inner core age, anisotropy and rotation
At the center of Earth is a solid iron ball about 1220 km in radius, growing as the liquid core around it freezes. How old it is, why seismic waves cross it faster in some directions, and how it turns relative to the rest of the planet are all disputed.
Why it matters
The inner core's growth powers the present geodynamo and records the thermal history of the deep Earth.
