Dynamical history of the Solar System
The planets did not always orbit where they do now: the giant planets moved, and their movements scattered smaller bodies and shaped the inner planets. Reconstructing this history explains the present layout of the Solar System.
Why it matters
The early dynamical history sets planetary masses, impact histories and the delivery of material to Earth, and is the template for interpreting exoplanet systems.
