Divergence of Venus and Earth
Venus has almost the same size and mass as Earth, yet it has a crushing carbon dioxide atmosphere, a surface hot enough to melt lead, no oceans and no magnetic field. Why two similar planets ended so differently is not settled.
Why it matters
Venus is the nearest test of which planetary properties decide whether an Earth-sized planet stays habitable.
