Majorana zero modes and topological superconductors
A Majorana zero mode is half of an ordinary electron state, bound to the end of a special superconducting wire or to a vortex core; two separated halves store one quantum bit that local noise cannot easily disturb.
Why it matters
Majorana modes are the basis of proposed topological qubits, and claims for them have repeatedly been challenged, so resolving them affects both physics and quantum-computing programs.
