Geodynamo and geomagnetic polarity reversals
Earth's magnetic field is made by churning liquid iron in the outer core, and every so often the north and south magnetic poles swap places. Nobody can yet say what triggers a swap or what kept the field alive for billions of years.
Why it matters
The field shields the atmosphere and life from the solar wind, and its history records the thermal evolution of the core.
