Black hole information and the Page curve
A black hole slowly evaporates by emitting faint heat radiation, called Hawking radiation. Quantum mechanics says the information about whatever fell in must come back out in that radiation, but Hawking's original calculation says it does not.
Why it matters
It is the sharpest known conflict between quantum mechanics and gravity, and its resolution constrains what spacetime is made of.
